Initial
consultation
ADHD & Autism

An initial consultation (also referred to as an initial assessment) in the diagnostic process is hugely important—it's the foundation for everything that follows. It helps determine whether a full diagnostic assessment is appropriate, guides next steps, and ensures that the process is tailored to the individual.

THE STEPS

information about you

We will start by inviting you to meet one of our team. It is important this meeting is as comfortable as possible for you, at a time and place which is easiest for you. For children under the age of 13 years we may meet with just parents or caregivers initially. If the child is over the age of 13 years then we will seek their consent to the assessment and also discuss who will come to the initial meeting.

2

Building a rapport

The initial consultation gives you an opportunity to meet a member of the team. We hope this will help with the development of a working relationship. It will also gives us the opportunity to explain the process of the assessment and the information we need from you.

3

screening measures

During the initial consultation we will ask you to complete screening measures appropriate to screening for either autism or ADHD. We will also ask you to complete some measures regarding your mental health. This is to help rule in or out other conditions / diagnoses.

4

finally

We will review your answers to the screening measures as well as the information you have given. We will discuss with you whether there is enough evidence to support going ahead with a full diagnostic assessment, as well as recommend next steps if this is not advisable.
